Although "pray the sinner's prayer" is a popular modern denominational response to those asking, "what must I do to be saved". Neither Jesus nor the apostles ever presented prayer as the last condition prior to salvation (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 8:35-38; 1 Peter 3:21).
2. The fervent and sincere prayers of such men as Cornelius and Saul of Tarsus did not cleanse them of their sins (Acts 10:1-5; 47-48; 11:13-14; Acts 9:11,18; 22:16). Hence, faith and prayer never made anyone a Christian.
3. The New Testament is completely silent concerning a certain prayer that a person prays in order to become a Christian. Thus the practice of the "sinner's prayer" is a human tradition, which is an addition to the Word of God (2 John 9). A human tradition that negates the real conditions for salvation (Acts 2:38).
